How to use Changsha Metro with a QR code or single ticket

A Changsha-specific first-ride guide to choosing one live QR or single-ticket route, with an airport service-centre and station-staff fallback.

Short answer

For a first Changsha Metro journey, choose one entry method that is ready before the gate and keep a physical or staffed fallback. Hunan's current official guide lists the Alipay Transport mini-program, WeChat's City Pass mini-program, Xiangxing Yikatong, UnionPay, My Changsha, Changsha Metro, Cmpay, and single-journey tickets from ticket machines or counters. It also says public signs and station announcements are in Chinese and English. These published options do not guarantee that every overseas account, card, wallet, phone, identity check, gate, fare, transfer, airport connection, or journey will work. If the live code is not already ready, buy a single ticket or ask visible station staff for the current supported route instead of repeatedly trying a gate.

Works without signal

Save before you go

Run a short no-signal rehearsal instead of assuming every app is ready.

  • Open downloaded maps or language tools in airplane mode.
  • Save the exact Chinese hotel and station names.
  • Keep account recovery and itinerary access independent of one phone.

Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.

Choose one ready route before the first gate

Do not make a time-sensitive Changsha arrival depend on several untested payment flows. The current official service guide lists several app or wallet paths alongside single-journey tickets from vending machines or ticket counters. Pick the one that is working on your own phone or card, save the complete Chinese station name and direction, and keep an independent fallback. The guide publishes a regular service window, but operating hours, entry controls, transfers, fare, payment acceptance, and platform arrangements are live decisions: check the current station signs and staff instructions before entering.

  • For a QR route, complete the responsible provider's current setup while you have battery, data, and time. A working merchant payment or code from another city does not prove Changsha gate access.
  • For a single ticket, use the current station ticket machine or counter, verify the exact destination, and retain the ticket and receipt until the whole journey is complete.
  • Keep the map route separate from the hotel, rail, airport, or attraction confirmation. A map pin does not prove the correct entrance, final connection, or operating status.

Treat the WeChat City Pass QR code as a live provider service

Hunan's official FAQ says the WeChat mini-program City Pass can issue a QR code for Changsha Metro and the Changsha Maglev Express Line. Its published setup asks the user to search the mini-program, choose the option to obtain a ride code, and accept the displayed payment-without-password agreement. Follow the current in-app screens, terms, identity, payment, privacy, and support prompts on your own device. The announcement does not confirm that every foreign number, overseas card, WeChat account, app version, identity check, gate, or trip is eligible.

  • Open the current code before reaching the gate and keep the phone usable through exit; do not rely on a screenshot or share an unlocked phone, payment code, password, card details, passport, or verification message with an unofficial helper.
  • Treat Metro and Maglev as separate live journeys even when the same published code can cover both; confirm the exact station, platform, transfer, fare, operating time, and final destination with the responsible operator.
  • If setup or payment is rejected, preserve the on-screen message, switch to the prepared ticket or staffed route, and investigate the provider or issuer issue separately rather than blocking the gate.

Use the airport service centre when a physical route is clearer

For an arrival at Changsha Huanghua International Airport, Hunan's official foreign-services guidance says the International Service Center for Foreigners can sell a local city card that works for the subway and local buses, with staff available to explain the purchase. The same official information lists the subway, Maglev train, local buses, and downtown shuttle buses as separate options. Treat the centre as a staffed way to clarify the current transport route or card purchase, not as a promise of a particular balance, payment method, language, queue, departure, fare, transfer, or onward result.

  • Show the full Chinese hotel, station, or meeting-point name and the actual time you can leave the airport; confirm whether the next step is Metro, Maglev, bus, shuttle, or another official transport route.
  • Ask about the current city-card purchase, coverage, top-up, payment, and refund conditions before loading value or relying on it for a time-sensitive connection.
  • For large luggage, a late arrival, an accessibility need, or a fragile rail or flight connection, compare the live public-transport plan with an official taxi, ready ride-hailing, hotel, or transport-provider fallback before entering a paid area.

Move a failed gate, fare record, or transfer to station staff

A red gate, unread code, wrong direction, missing entry or exit record, or payment error does not prove that the whole Changsha journey is impossible. Step aside without forcing a barrier or following another passenger, retain the phone screen, ticket, card, and receipt, and ask the visible station counter or help point to check the active record and the next supported route. Hunan's current Metro guide publishes the service hotline 0731-86850000; confirm the current purpose, language, hours, and support scope with the operator rather than assuming it can resolve every payment or connection issue.

  • Give staff the exact Chinese station name, line, direction, approximate entry time, and any message shown by the code or gate before buying or scanning another fare method.
  • If the issue belongs to a wallet, account, card issuer, or app, use that provider's official support only after staff have clarified the fare record. Station staff cannot promise account approval, a reversed charge, or a particular refund.
  • If a rail, airport, hotel, or attraction connection is at risk, separately check its current operating instructions. Repairing a Metro fare record does not guarantee an onward connection.

Before you rely on this answer

China travel rules and app behavior can change by city, route, account, passport, airline, and local inspection practice. Treat this page as a traveler-friendly starting point, then verify official or provider details before booking or packing anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a QR code on Changsha Metro?

Hunan's official guide lists Alipay Transport, WeChat City Pass, Xiangxing Yikatong, UnionPay, My Changsha, Changsha Metro, and Cmpay among the payment routes. Its official FAQ says the WeChat City Pass QR code can be used for Changsha Metro and the Maglev Express Line. Those publications do not guarantee eligibility for every overseas account, card, wallet, phone, identity check, gate, fare, transfer, or journey, so complete the provider's current setup before a time-sensitive ride and keep a ticket or staffed fallback ready.

Can I buy a single ticket for Changsha Metro?

Yes. Hunan's current Changsha Metro guide lists single-journey tickets purchased at ticket vending machines or ticket counters. Check the live machine or counter for the exact fare, destination, payment options, language, availability, and any current journey conditions; the guide does not promise a particular overseas card, machine, or sales point.

Can a foreign visitor buy a Changsha transport card at the airport?

Hunan's foreign-services guidance says the International Service Center for Foreigners at Changsha Huanghua International Airport provides a local city card for subway and local-bus use, with staff available to help with the purchase. Ask at the live service point about the current card, payment, balance, top-up, coverage, refund, language, and route conditions before relying on it for a connection.

What should I do if my Changsha Metro QR code or ticket fails?

Step aside without forcing the gate, retain the ticket, card, phone screen, and receipt, and ask visible station staff to check the active entry record and supported next route before trying another method. Hunan's official guide lists the Metro service hotline as 0731-86850000; confirm its current scope, language, and instructions with the operator, and use the responsible wallet or issuer's official support only after the station has clarified the fare record.
